Watercolours from the Towneley Collection

14 August 2020 – 6 January 2021

The range of watercolours currently on show include artists JMW Turner, David Cox, William Henry Hunt and Henry Benjamin Roberts.

In the 18th Century watercolours were delicate coloured drawings. The watercolour paint was translucent, allowing the paper to show through giving a different texture and luminosity to the artwork.

Paintings within the exhibition range from landscapes showing a varying range of terrains to depictions of narrative scenes influenced by the rural idyll.
