The Ferns at Brantwood by Artist in Residence Kate Houghton

19 May – 29 June 2018

Kate Houghton originally trained in sculpture, her paintings focus on forms of growth making those found in plants central to her work. In her residency she has developed a series of drawings and paintings based on Brantwood’s fern collection.

Kate completes her residency with an exhibition of paintings developed from her drawings started in a week in May 2017. Her drawings were to focus on the crosiers of these prehistoric plants as they unfurl once again on the slopes surrounding Brantwood.

The season was early and most of the Dryopteris ferns were already reaching their full form.

Taking a bucket with paints high into the Moorland garden Kate made a number of trials with washes of colour in direct response to the way in which evening sun pours down through to the heart of these plants pinning shuttlecocks of light across the hillside.

Contemplation on the interior force of growth hand in hand with the exterior energy of light is central to the paintings.

Where the tangible world points beyond itself to the transcendental.
