Transplantation – an exhibition of narrative contemporary jewellery

Bluecoat Display Centre

12th May to 23rd June 2012

Curated by Professor Norman Cherry in conjunction with the Hub: National Centre for Craft & Design and the University of Lincoln, this is a touring exhibition of contemporary narrative jewellery. Created by a group of artists based in either Britain or Australia, it explores the sense of place and cultural identity through the theme of Transplantation. Each artist will examine their individual cultural identity as a consequence of their own personal and family experiences.

Jewellery, probably the most exciting of todays applied arts, offers an artform which, inter alia, provides a means of recording memory and experience in a portable and wearable form. Through this medium it is possible to express ideas, thoughts, and concerns, which may not be achievable in other ways. A selected group of twelve contemporary jewellery artists from the UK and Australia have been asked to create up to three pieces of work each, which will articulate the notion of ‘transplantation’ in a tangible form.

UK artists include: Jivan Astfalck-London, Norman Cherry Lincoln, Lin Cheung London, Jack Cunningham Birmingham, Jo Pond Derby, Laura Potter London. Australian artists include: Roseanne Bartley Melbourne, Nicholas Bastin Melbourne, Anna Davern Melbourne, Joung-Mee Do Sydney, Sheridan Kennedy Sydney, Bridie Lander Sydney/Birmingham

Even jewellers whose work is not overtly illustrative often have a story to tell. In some cases participants existing reputations are already built on narrative and metaphor. Others are committed to this project because of personal interests and experiences, as migrants temporary or permanent; as descendants of migrants; or through witnessing schoolfriends leaving for new shores and knowing the sense of loss of those left behind.

For the artists involved, this project has provided a significant opportunity for personal research and development of their professional output, and major international exposure in a country with a developing constituency for the subject.

Martin Creed, Work No. 890, DON’T WORRY 2008

ARTIST ROOMS returns to Tate Liverpool in 2012, with a display of seven important works from Turner Prize winning artist Martin Creed (b. 1968). These works have recently been donated by Creed jointly to Tate and National Galleries of Scotland for the ARTIST ROOMS collection. Creed is the first new contemporary artist to join the collection since it was established in 2008.

Born in 1968 in Wakefield, Creed grew up in Glasgow. He studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, and has exhibited extensively worldwide.

The seven works presented in ARTIST ROOMS Martin Creed are in a range of different media including a neon installation, Work No. 890 (Don’t Worry) 2008, a 21-part drawing, Work No. 944 2008 and a recent series of four paintings from 2011.

Refreshing, unexpected and humorous, Creed’s work challenges our preconceptions and rearranges the rules of conceptual art.

ARTIST ROOMS is jointly owned by Tate and National Galleries of Scotland and was established through The d’Offay Donation in 2008, with the assistance of the National Heritage Memorial Fund, the Art Fund and the Scottish and British Governments. Charline von Heyl

Liverpool Tate

24th February to 27th May 2012

Woman #2 (detail) 2009, Charline von Heyl

Discover the work of acclaimed contemporary artist Charline von Heyl in this brand new exhibition. Distinctive, imaginative and always surprising, Charline von Heyl’s work offers a fresh and exciting approach to the world of abstract art. Von Heyl is at the forefront of a new generation of abstract painters who have rejected late modernism’s emphasis on a singular signature style. Charline von Heyl at Tate Liverpool will be the first major exhibition of the artist’s work in the UK. Featuring forty two of her large canvasses and a number of unique works on paper, the exhibition explores von Heyl’s work from 1990-2011.

Born in Germany in 1960, von Heyl studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy with Jörg Immendorf and Fritz Schwegler. She witnessed first hand painting’s resurgence in the 1980s through the vibrant Köln-based art scene, where radical and experimental approaches to painting by artists such as Martin Kippenberger and Albert Oehlen began a dramatic expansion of the field.

Taking a broadly chronological approach, Charline von Heyl will demonstrate von Heyl’s diverse approach to painting. Often employing unconventional painting methods and actively resisting a single style or vision, she has constantly reinvented the art form.

Charline von Heyl is organised in collaboration with Kunsthalle Nuremberg, where the exhibition will be displayed from 11 July – 30 September 2012.

Edward Lear: Artist, Explorer and Poet

Walker Art Gallery Liverpool

28th April to 23rd July

Cattaro, Yugoslavia, by Edward Lear, 1866

‘Edward Lear: Artist, Explorer and Poet’ reveals five of Lear’s most stunning watercolours from his years spent travelling from 1837 to his death in 1888.

Edward Lear had a vast and varied career as an artist spanning six decades. Today he is best remembered for his nonsense poetry and caricatures, which demonstrate his offbeat humour and personality.

When Lear was 25 he moved to Italy. He spent the rest of his life based in Europe but travelled worldwide to remote and beautiful places. He created numerous sketches and works of the places he visited that many of his patrons and friends in England would never see.

To share his experiences with others Lear documented and intricately described nearly every day of the 50 years he spent travelling. He stated that he wanted to ‘topographise the journeyings’ of his life, recording his movements in sketches, diary entries, letters and journals, some of which he later published.

Lear annotated his sketches with notes and descriptions, giving the works a highly personal quality. He deliberately misspelt words and played with repetition and senseless  phrases, creating his own unique language.

Van Gogh and Gauguin: two self-portraits

Lady Lever Art Gallery

18th February to 11th June 2012

Two striking self-portraits by van Gogh and Gauguin are on display at the Lady Lever Art Gallery, on loan from the Musée d’Orsay, Paris.

Vincent van Gogh (born 1853) and Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) are two of the most popular artists of the Post-Impressionist era. Both developed ideas and techniques that influenced the development of modern 20th century art. The van Gogh painting is one of more than 40 self-portraits by the artist – it shows how he liked to use rapid brushstrokes and thick layers of paint. Gauguin’s dates from a difficult period during which he returned to Paris in 1893 in an unsuccessful bid to sell his work.

The paintings have been lent to the Lady Lever Art Gallery in exchange for its loan of ‘The Blessed Damozel’ by Rossetti to the exhibition ‘Debussy, Music and the Arts’ at the Musée de l’Orangerie, Paris, 21 February – 11 June 2012.
