Lecturer Susan Rumfitt (jewellery expert from the BBC’s Antiques Roadshow) will give two lectures:

Love Power and Scandal – a royal jewel for every occasion. From Henry VIII to the Duchess of Cambridge this lecture will focus on a variety of royal jewels that have caused gasps of shock or amazement over the last 500 years. From the powerful jewels of Henry VIII, the scandalous jewels surrounding Charles II, George IV and of course the Duchess of Windsor, to the romantic stories behind the jewels belonging to Victoria, there really is a royal jewel for every occasion.

Designed for Wearing – jewellery in the 20 Century. From the ‘Little Black Dress’ created by Chanel to the ‘Chain Mail’ fabrics of Mary Quant and the colour explosions of Versace, fashion has had an exciting journey through the twentieth century. Throughout this lecture we will discover how jewellery design incorporated the delicacy of the Edwardian period, the dramatic contrasts of the Deco period, and the sculptural creations of the 1930s, the cocktail style of the 40s and 50s, the ‘new age’ influence of the 60s and 70s, and the ‘bling’ culture of the 80s to produce a truly unforgettable period of jewellery design.
