This one-day trip to the Northeast, takes in the Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle, County Durham. Bowes Museum, built in the style of a French chateau, is a beautiful piece of architecture set against stunning gardens and countryside, and is regarded as one of the most significant museums outside London. A recent £12 million transformation includes impressive new galleries housing vast collections of European fine and decorative art, including ceramics, textiles and furniture. Highlights include paintings by by El Greco, Goya and Canaletto.

Programme for the day
  • 10.30 – 11.00 am On arrival, coffee/tea and biscuits will be provided in the Jubilee Room
  • 11.30 am A guided tour of Bowes Museum starting from the Jubilee Room
  • 12.30 pm Lunch – sandwiches, cake and coffee/tea will be served in the Jubilee Room for everyone
  • 2.00 pm Performance of the famous life-size musical automaton, The Silver Swan, followed by free time to explore the Museum and gardens or walk into the centre of Barnard Castle to explore the Castle, or perhaps the many antique shops in Thorngate
  • 4.45 pm Leave Bowes Museum for home

  • Lucile – Titanic survivor. The first British fashion designer to achieve renoun internationally. Exhibition of gowns, lingerie and evening wear
  • Frida Kahlo and Diego – a a photographic exhibition of their work

The cost is £30 per person, which includes transport, admission charges, morning coffee/tea and lunch. Various coach pick up points are available in St Annes, Fairhaven, Lytham and Kirkham.
