Bolton Museum Paintings and Decorative Arts Collections & Exhibitions

Highlights of Bolton’s collection of paintings, prints & drawings include a significant collection of works by Bolton-born artist Thomas Moran and his wife Mary Nimmo Moran.

There are also works by Rowlandson, Blake and Turner as well as a small selection of old master paintings by Giordano, Colonia and Dughet.

In addition to Egyptology, Local History, Natural History and Art Gallery displays, the Museum also has regular themed exhibitions throughout the year. Please see separate entries.

Decorative Art Collections

The gallery’s decorative art collection contains around 100 contemporary ceramics dating from the 1970s to mid 1990s. There are also contemporary craft objects including several pieces of glass and several ceramics, including a commission of a piece for the museum by David Cleverly.

Bolton Museum also has a collection of 147 pieces of Japanese netsuke, inro and scent bottles. The collection was given to the museum in 1959, in a bequest from Miss Edith Taylor.
