Lizzie Darbyshire

Lizzie is a graduate of the Courtauld Institute of Art. She has wide experience as a lecturer in the history of art, working with fine art societies and art galleries throughout Britain and around the world. She is particularly interested in placing works of art within the wider social and economic context.

If any painters achieved a perfect harmony between dispassionate realism and a deep expression of spirituality, it was those who were working in the area of Brussels, Bruges and Ghent during the 15th century. Artists such as Jan van Eyck, Rogier van der Weyden and Hans Memling produced breathtakingly beautiful paintings, showing the diversity of characters, costumes and curios which today give us an enlightening window on their world. This lecture examines the emergence of northern Renaissance art and its immediate influence and dissemination throughout Europe.
